Opt-out, Shop-out
This event is scheduled for Saturday, April 2 at Smithhaven Mall starting at 10 AM.
You are asked to create your own OPT-OUT T-shirt and wear it while shopping at the mall. In talking to our NYS Assembly persons and Senators, we heard over and over again how this movement got the attention of Albany...and that is why the Opt-Out movement is still going strong this year. Even though they will not count, students are still being required to take the tests this year.
This is a high visibility event at one of the busier venues in Suffolk. Because Smithhaven Mall is private property, this is not a demonstration or a protest or a rally, but simply a group of people out for a morning of shopping who all just happen to be wearing the same T-shirt. There will be no signs, organized marching or leafleting.
This worked very well in Nassau County at Roosevelt Field earlier this month with support from the Nassau locals and supportive parent groups. The event generated some very good media coverage.
This is a perfect opportunity for members to do something meaningful and fun about an issue of great importance to them, and maybe get a little shopping done in the process.
